We arrived at the hospital around 5 am and I was taken up to labor and delivery to check in. Contractions were still going pretty strong and close together. I was managing the discomfort pretty well while we were filling out the necessary paperwork.
I was then taken to our room where it was time to undress and put on the lovely hospital gown. Since my water broke my midwife did the swab test to make sure that it was amniotic fluid. The swab was positive so the iv was put in and I was hooked up to monitor baby’s heart rate and my contractions.
Around 6 we were finally settled in and this is when the contractions were really strong and I wasn’t handling them as well as I was earlier. My energy level was so low I kept feeling like I was just going to pass out. I went medication free with my first daughter and that was my plan during this delivery. Then came the back labor. I experienced back labor with my first and it sucks. When I would finish with a contraction I would immediately get the intense pain in my low back and then right back to another contraction. I felt like I was in constant discomfort without even a little break.
Luckily, throughout all the chaos, our oldest daughter was relaxed and getting her beauty sleep. She stayed with us until my sister came to keep her occupied.
When my midwife came in to check me and I was only 4 cm. I think if we were to have another baby I would rather not know how far along I am. Hearing her say 4 cm I started to doubt myself that I could continue on naturally. I tried to stay positive and just lean on my husband for comfort.
It was around 7 that I looked at my husband and said I want an epidural. Forty five minutes later the anesthesiologist came in to administer it. Not long after he left the room I was then hooked up to the machines for continuous monitoring and a catheter was put in. I was still able to tell when I was having a contraction but it just felt like pressure. I finally felt like I could relax and ended up taking a little nap.
My midwife came to check me two more times. The second time she said I was ready. It was around 9:20 when I started to push. Because of the epidural I had a more difficult time pushing than with my first. Even though the pushing was more difficult for me I only needed about five pushes and she was out.
Second Baby Girl Has Arrived
Emersyn Pride was delivered at 9:32 in the morning on me and my husband’s fourth wedding anniversary. She was 7 lbs. 15 oz and 21.5 inches long.
Thankfully my labor and delivery for both girls went without any complications. They are both happy and healthy.
